Just Got Win 10 - Now I'm Effed!

Postby Roger Wilco Jr » Tue Jul 19, 2016 2:10 am

Now SLI doesn't work. With it enabled the main menu looks better and there may be other graphical improvements, but it does not increase the FPS. I double checked that SLI increased FPS about 70-80% just the other day. I just don't know if this is a Win 10 issue, or something else.

Voice Attack doesn't work in game. It works fine in its own window, but commands are not recognized in game. My bindings got screwed up with the upgrade, but I've reset them and it still doesn't work.

TrackIR will not recenter in game. Works fine otherwise, like with VA.

I now have to run the launcher as an administrator, so I don't know if that has something to do with it.

The taskbar keeps disappearing (thanks, Win 10). I can get around that somewhat by alt-tabbing, but TrackIR automatically minimizes to the taskbar. So if my TrackIR gets off center, and the taskbar is gone, I can only shut everything down and reboot.

Oh, screw it! :x

I'm going to bed, and have disc 1 of The Expanse showing up tomorrow, so I probably won't get back to working on these problems until Wednesday. In the mean time, I'd appreciate any suggestions. :)
It's time to give this another go.

You...are...giving...me...a...head...ache. :)

I hope my install goes better (Wed or Thurs).

edit* IIRC, the main ED forums were saying the recent Nvidia driver pooped out their SLI, and rolling back worked. Try an older driver!

I moved from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 about a month or two ago. I've had no problems at all with either Elite or with TrackIR.

Definitely look into the SLI-related issues with the nVidia drivers.

Try reinstalling the drivers. I've noticed that graphics and audio drivers in particular seem to do... poorly... during the upgrade process but reinstalling the drivers fixed most of the issues for me when I did it. I still have some issues with my sound card driver periodically, but I had those issues on Windows Vista and Windows 7 as well.

Latest Nvidia drivers breaks SLI in game. Roll Back.

Try running VA as Administrator or setting the target application to the Elite-Dangerous64.exe file (select it in the list when ED is running) and see if that helps.

TrackIR will not recenter in game. Works fine otherwise, like with VA.

See this thread about a windows 10 TrackIR bug: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous ... ore_win10/
Maybe the Admin Bug? Try as Admin?
I now have to run the launcher as an administrator, so I don't know if that has something to do with it.

A lot seem to need to do that...
I see a theme....

Don't reboot, open task manager and Kill the Eplorer.exe process and it will restart.

Do you have multiple monitors? Know to happen when more than one display is used. Are you running Full Screen, Windowed, or Borderless?

Possible solve: Open taskbar properties and set to autohide. Then reboot, turn off autohide off, reboot.

Other option for all issues: Refresh your PC and keep everything. Do all updates then see if the issues persist.

The Windows 10 Reddit is a good resource.

Good luck.

I 'upgraded' two weeks ago - Game would not launch.
I play on a bootcamped Mac, only bootcamped to play ED.

I downgraded two weeks ago.

I installed the free upgrade a couple of weeks ago too, had some issues so rolled back. It's easy to do and while Win10 looks better 8.1 is just as good and has less little bugs imho (I use Win10 on my work laptop and it's a pain).

I've stayed on Windows 7, and only Windows 8.x systems are being "clean installed" with Windows 10. Right now that's only a few notebooks of my wife's. All my systems are Windows 7, whether I installed clean (self-assemble desktops), or got off-lease or refurbished systems (my professional notebooks).

Yes, you can use your Windows 7-8.1 keys to "clean install" and "upgrade" to Windows 10, although once you do (whether clean install or in-place upgrade), it's "locked" to your system, at least if you have uEFI (which can store the key) -- not sure about PC BIOS systems ... I think they use the on-mainboard MAC address or something else (allegedly it's locked too). Yes, this includes non-OEM locked Windows 7-8.1 versions last time I checked, which is f'd up if you ask me. The whole purpose of the retail, and non-volume OEM, pricing is that you can move the license -- that's why you pay $100-200 (Retail or unlocked OEM Home-Pro) instead of $25-50 (OEM model locked Home-Pro).

Windows 10 continues to suffer from artificial issues, as well as shotty, outsourced development ...

When it comes to Windows, I never upgrade a previous version if I want a new one. I always do a clean install. Takes more time to do, but there will be a lot less problems and at the same time it means a good cleanup of useless stuff left behind over time. Some stuff I keep on other drives of course, like Steam library for example, so I do not need to download huge amounts of stuff again.

Always the best way, especially with Microsoft finally ending its "game playing" with the media starting with Windows 10. It used to be they had too many media types for different keys, and it was bad enough they let everything from pirated software to viruses into some distributions (largely just pre-releases, but the original XP retail release had the former). Now they just have 1 media set.

That wasn't always the case, especially with NT5.x (NT5.0/Windows 2000 and NT5.1/XP-2003). It was cake to slipstream in drivers and software updates into the installation distribution. Microsoft really listened to its PC OEMs and Gold Solution providers for 2000 and, even more so again, XP/2003.

Windows has become a joke that is only solved by cloning or, for servers in Enterprises, VMware ESX/vSphere. And I say this as someone who keeps his Microsoft certifications current, and keeps up with all those tools.

To Microsoft's credit, their own Store and "Signature Service" comes without all the PC OEM bloatware. They regularly have sales on 6-9 month old models the PC OEM is having trouble getting rid of that is $300-500 off list. That's how I buy all my wife's notebooks, as she always wants something cool looking (I could care less for myself).

Well, NT6+ (especially NT6.1 aka Windows 7/2008 and later) offers three (3) different solutions for mixing things.
    Hard Links
    Junctions (Soft Links)
    Volume Mounts

Good TechNet article here with links to more: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Fo ... nservergen

I've tested both Junctions and Volume Mounts in NT6.1 (Windows 7), and they both work with Steam and all the games I threw at it, including Fallout 4. But usually I just use Steam's own tools. There is a Folder Management option in Steam on how to create such, although nothing can be downloading at the time (IIRC).
