Where do you guys get all your Commodities and Materials?
Simple really.
With great difficulty and long hours searching.
Thanks, makes me happier that it's not just me.
It does take a while, particularly if you spam lower level engineer rolls with easy to find resources to increase rep.
The ones you need the rep for most are the weapon ones, as you 'spend it' if you want to buy a special effect on a good roll for other modifications.
Mining - spent 3 evening play sessions just trying to get 10T of Painite. By the end was throwing away other stuff.
Mining gives you Praseodynium, Samarium and Osmium, and lots of common mats like iron, nickel etc and some rarer ones occasionally.
Other than that, CZ ships (still strange to stop and scoop in a CZ)
Even RES ships you blow up liberate material scoopables.
Carried collector limpets for a long while, even when not mining, and hoovered up anything I came across. More selective now.
Just be careful they dont scoop illegal goods as well as the mats.
Signal sources - I see what every one is that I pass, and jump in if likely to have what I am looking for.
Encoded emissions near inhabited planets (fly around them in SC) gives satellites with firmware.
Degraded emissions and other similar types can give a ship data beacon to scan for data.
Combat aftermath - good source of things.
Degraded emissions etc. All low threat.
Nav beacons - help with killing wanted ships, earning money and able to scoop engineer mats. Can get wake scans as well.
And missions. Hit and miss, but you earn money and get engineer materials, although the x3 does not apply unfortunately
Some commodities can be purchased from markets.
Throughout, Inara has been a good source of info on blueprints (what is needed) and materials (where to find / buy / earn them)
The usual RNG goodness, but does not feel too much of a grind if you incorporate it into every SC jump, and take a squint at missions each time you dock.
As Tor said, easier now scooping multiplies x3 the mats now, and applies to mining derived mats also.
You end up hitting storage capacity with things like Iron, and either have to discard them to make room, or spam them with an engineer to get rep, even if it is fir a mod you dont actually want.
Just a mining laser (and limpets) with no refinary can still let you collect mats - I found this to be easier than random planet driving.
Passive targeting of ships around starports, nav beacons etc give shield data, and swap a kill warrent scanner for a wake scanner, and scan wakes you see around starports as well. You will probably have to discard some more common data, to make sure you have room for the rare datamined wake exceptions (FSD G5 upgrade), took me ages to get some of those.
These days I dont bother with the KWS anyway, as the NPCs dont stay in front long enough for it to complete mostly.
And if you are carrying even 1T of goodies, pirates will follow wherever you go.
Mine are almost always Elite FDL and Anaconda, usually every 3 jumps, sometimes higher, but I permanently have something in the hold for engineer mids that I collect as I go about other things.
Blueprints

http://inara.cz/galaxy-componentsUSS quality varies by system, but permit ones seem to spawn slightly more of the rarer contents in the particular USS type.
