Finally did some surface missions ...

Postby thebs » Mon May 23, 2016 3:44 am

So ... I finally stopped grinding, and did some surface recon and some surface missions. I guess I'm waiting for 2.1 to drop before I do anything else.

Destroyed my first four (4) skimmers and found legal loot, gold (7 tons). Then I did a pair of "pilot rescue" missions in very hilly terrain, and found it very frustrating to get my ship to actually land. Although it was cool watching it take off and come back again, over and over.

I'm still in the Python. Just don't think I'll be moving to an Anaconda any time soon. Was playing with various configurations via edshipyard.com, and other than doubling the utility components, it's not that much better. I guess it is cool to have 4-5 A0 Shield Boosters for 800-1,000 shielding.

But when I got it configured in an universal setup like I wanted, it's jump range was only 27ly, +4ly over my Python at 23ly ... at 3x the cost!

the only reason I even went to the conda was the massive jump range for exploration, a lot of people do it for the armament though. I find the conda to be worth the investment, but dang is it a hefty one.

A typical evening with the A-Team. I am not sure what was better, the dying of laughter or the arguing over "Alice" "Roger" "Ralph" and the Terrible Lying Used ship Salesman... I was still chuckling this morning when I was having coffee at 5:30am.

There may be lulls with the A-Team, but there are never dulls. :P

It's like when you were a kid. Your toys that you loved all year start looking a little dull and boring in the month or weeks before Christmas :P I have been doing things that I hope are going to help me such as Alliance rep, Individual faction rep like for Sirius Corp. where it gives me permits, and not really worrying about the credits.

Falcon_D wrote:Yeah. That catches a lot of new commanders out. Combat zone CGs work like normal combat zone fighting. You have to select the faction you are fighting for when you enter the combat zone. Luckily I found this out on my 3rd week when I tried one. :)

My first CG was combat related and I spent about 10 hours killing things on a Saturday. I had signed up and spent the whole day in the CY blasting ships. I was rocking and never really got challenged and thought I was Boss because they never really came at me. Imagine my weeping surprise when I got back to the station and had Zero combat bonds for the 10 hours of work. I felt like an idiot when I googled what the hell was wrong with that CG.....

Since Combat Zones seem to be a topic with the current CG's going on, I'll leave this link here for those that aren't very familiar with CZ's. ;)

Much appreciated!

I wish FD would have put in some other first-time text-tips and prompts, like they do the launch sequence to test out your controls. It knows when you jump into a combat area, to give a similar prompt, which you can turn off after that first-time. Little things like that would go a long, long way. Almost want to file a bug with a few of these suggestions, really simple things that make all-the-difference.

All the more reason I do a lot of "trial'n error" the first few times. I do a few things, then go back and ensure I did it right. I did a Google search after the 2nd time, and figured it out.

If anything, I think the left and right panes could use a little update. But there are bigger issues for FD right now, and those can wait.

Well, I'm only seeing +4-5ly benefit over the Python. I really love the balance of the Python too. And I can land at any station as it only use a medium pad.

I don't have the money yet for a well-equipment Anaconda. I think I can barely afford the base cost now. But I just don't see myself opting for one anytime soon. I think, at most, I might use an Anaconda for combat, as those eight (8) utility mounts. I.e., a half-dozen Shield Boosters really do add up. Maybe if I do a run to the galactic core, will I go for the Anaconda.

But for within 3,000ly exploring, I'm finding my decently equipped, 23ly (21-22ly w/64 tons fuel) jump range 'Explython' is really fun. I'm also jumping into a number of systems that have been missed because people bypassed them with 30ly+ jump ranges. In fact many times I purposely 'dial down' my jump range as if I was fully of cargo+fuel and jump only 16-18ly.

At least I've stopped grinding altogether, being my time is limited as it is. It's just too much fun to not enjoy the game to the fullest, doing things one has never done before.

You can also switch your route planner from "fastest routes" to "economical routes", resulting in even smaller jumps (4-5 LY) by default. If you only do a honk, scoop & jump, you can visit a large number of systems in a very short time. The drive only sips fuel with the small jumps, meaning you need to spend less time scooping. Unfortunately, this also means you spend most of the time waiting for the FSD to cool down and charge up, and do not get the extra pay-out for level 2 and level 3 scans.

I find dialing-down just 4-5ly less is the best balance, and makes a serious dent in fuel consumption. It's literally those last +3-4ly extra range that really eats the fuel. E.g., my 22-23ly jump range Python hits the 'sweet spot' at around 15ly. I literally uses only 1/3rd the fuel as just +50% more jump, but don't often get that with econo-route.

The econo-route often gets far more tedious, dropping under 10ly and well under 50% jump range. Maybe my experiences are just different, but I don't see it being only 4-5ly less, but 8-15ly less. I'll give you an example I had just recently when going out to HIP 3582 about 400ly out from where I was located.

Fastest was 20 jumps, and wouldn't make it halfway on fuel.
Econo was 48 jumps, and would make it all the way.
My -4.5ly was 28 jumps, and still would make it all the way.

In fact, if I could ask FD to add one option, it's to set the max jump range arbitrary, not just locked to cargo capacity. In fact, it would be nice to get a fuel consumption estimation with it too. Or let me put it another way, sometimes I like to have 2x 64t cargo (128t) instead of just one, because it lets me arbitrary drop the jump range to 16ly, instead 19ly.

Why isn't that a dialer we have, regardless of cargo?

In the beta practicing with fixed weapons and FA off.

First ship of the day was a master Vulture vs. my Vulture. I started with lasers and he easily turned around on me. After passing each other, I tried an FA off flip. By the time I finished my flip, he was already shooting me, while my return shots tended to mostly miss him. He got my shields down and 50% hull before I finally turned the tables and got him. I'm not sure if he could outmaneuver me due to my sucking or if he had engineered thrusters.

Then I killed about 20 ships w/o any problem until a dangerous Dropship showed up. This guy could also turn on a dime, but he also had engineered weapons. It didn't take long before my shields were gone and I was taking more damage. I turned to run and thankfully the cops joined in so I was able to administer the coup de grace.

I may have to rethink ignoring the engineers when 2.1 drops and instead look into upgrading my ship.
It's time to give this another go.

Just ran some surface delivery missions from Apathaam, seeing as there are no CZs :(
Glad I did not hump the Corvette over.

Reading that back, before posting made me smile, so left as is

Hello,
Currently still exploring with my Explorerconda. About 18k ly from Azrael. Really missing my Python. But the 35 ly jump range of the Conda makes travelling to distant places a bit easier. Hope to get back to Lady Jayne in a few weeks time.

Have fun, fly safe. o7
